Designing for Care: The Intentional Construction of the Be Well OC Irvine Campus

When someone walks through the doors of a Be Well OC campus, they may be arriving during one of the most difficult moments of their life. They may be seeking help for themselves, supporting a loved one, or trying to understand where to turn next. In those moments, the environment matters.

At Be Well OC, our spaces are designed with intention – not just to look welcoming, but to actively support behavioral and mental health, emotional regulation, and dignity. From color to light to materials, every design choice helps create a place where people feel safe, respected, and supported.

Because care begins the moment someone walks through our doors.

Space as Part of the Continuum of Care
One of Be Well OC’s primary goals is to help people navigate the mental health system and access the right level of support at the right time. That philosophy extends beyond our services and into our physical spaces.

Our campuses are designed to support people at different points in their mental health journey, whether they are seeking immediate support, ongoing care, or guidance on available resources. The environment reinforces what we aim to provide: stability, clarity, and calm in moments that can feel overwhelming.

The physical space itself is part of the continuum of care, offering reassurance before a conversation even begins.

Soft Blues, Muted Greens, and Warm Neutrals
Soft blues and muted greens appear throughout Be Well OC’s campuses, particularly in shared spaces, waiting areas, and transition zones. These tones are associated with calm, trust, and emotional steadiness, helping slow the nervous system during moments of heightened stress.

Warm neutrals and earth tones are used in counseling rooms and community spaces to add warmth and approachability. Together, these colors create an environment that feels welcoming, grounded, and respectful, reinforcing dignity and belonging for everyone who walks through the door.

Art That Reflects Community, Place, and Identity
Art plays a meaningful role in shaping the experience of Be Well OC’s spaces. Throughout the Irvine Campus, artwork by Orange County and Southern California artists is intentionally featured to reflect the community we serve and the place we call home.

The art draws inspiration from local geography, natural landscapes, and symbols significant to Irvine and the surrounding region. These visual elements help ground the space in familiarity, offering subtle reminders of connection, place, and continuity, especially important for individuals navigating uncertainty or distress.

Rather than feeling generic or institutional, the artwork not only provides moments of joy and inspiration, but also reinforces that Be Well OC is deeply rooted in the local community. It communicates care, representation, and belonging, reminding visitors that this space was created with them in mind.

The Mural: Currents of Calm
A central mural at the Be Well Irvine Campus serves as both a visual anchor and a reflection of the community it was created to support. Currents of Calm, designed by Santa Ana–based muralist Damin Lujan, transforms a blank wall into a moment of movement, balance, and intention.

Shaped by community input, the mural reflects Be Well OC’s commitment to creating spaces that feel human, inclusive, and grounded in care. Its flowing forms and layered colors evoke a sense of calm and continuity, mirroring the emotional experience Be Well strives to provide for everyone who walks through the door.

The mural celebrates the diverse cultures and shared humanity of Orange County, reinforcing a sense of belonging within the space. More than an aesthetic element, the mural is a quiet reminder that healing can begin with what we see, and how a space makes us feel. It stands as proof that intentional design has the power to shift not only the atmosphere of a place, but how people show up within it.

Reimagining What Behavioral Health Spaces Can Feel Like
For many people, mental and behavioral health care has long been associated with cold, institutional environments. Be Well OC is intentionally reimagining what those spaces can look and feel like.

Our campuses are designed to feel welcoming without being overwhelming, professional without being intimidating. Color plays a central role in shifting that experience — helping people feel that they are entering a place of care, not judgment.

This approach supports Be Well’s broader mission to reduce stigma and expand access to mental health care across Orange County.

At Be Well OC, design is never separate from purpose. Every color choice, material, and detail reflects our commitment to compassionate, accessible care.

By creating environments that feel calm, grounded, and human, we aim to support not just treatment, but trust. Because when people feel comfortable and respected, they are more likely to seek help, engage in care, and take the next step forward.
